Fierce fighting broke out in Nagorno-Karabakh on September 27, 2020.
The disputed territory is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan, but is a de facto independent state with an Armenian ethnic majority. Dozens of people have been reported killed and hundreds wounded in what have been the worst clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan since the 1990s. Fighting continues, and leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have refused to hold peace talks despite urgent appeals from Russia, the US and other countries calling for the two sides to stop escalating the conflict.
