Supporting Youth and Families: Managing Stress and Anxiety in the age of COVID-19

Supporting Youth and Families: Managing Stress and Anxiety in the age of COVID-19 In this workshop, Chris McLaughlin, LCSW, Associate Vice President of Community and Pediatric Services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Maine, will provide a brief overview of anxiety disorders in youth and adolescents and will review signs, symptoms, and recommendations for parenting youth struggling with anxiety. He will share the impacts that the COVID-19 global pandemic has had on young people (and their families and providers!) and how to create a more successful home and community-based environment for these youth. Chris will describe the negative effects associated with “Pandemic Parenting”, the impacts this has on us all, and offer suggestions to help decrease “COVID Chaos” in the home. This workshop will also introduce concepts of grief and loss, healthy mourning, self-care, and how to foster resiliency in children, families, and ourselves.

Workshop Training Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to describe how the stress and anxiety associated with COVID-19 impact youth, families and caregivers, and providers.
2) Participants will gain an understanding of how the frameworks of grief/loss and mourning apply to the COVID-19 pandemic for individuals of all ages.
3) Participants will develop skills for self-care and identify action steps to foster resiliency in youth, families, and “teams”.
