I don't have ready access to the room-temperature liquid bluing chemicals (which are expensive over here), such as Tru-Blu, so am reverting to the age-old technique of hot-bluing (in this case using waste motor oil); this involves heating the work-piece until it takes on a straw colour, then a blue tinge, then quenching it in oil - by having an initially polished surface, the resulting finish is a nice blue sheen.
