Migrant workers in Malaysia struggle with restrictions

Migrant workers in Malaysia struggle with restrictions (26 Apr 2020) Migrant workers in Malaysia said on Sunday they were struggling to cope with the restrictions put in place by the government to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Hundreds of Imigrants from Indonesia have been left stranded with no work after the Malaysian government halted many construction projects.

They have been unable to return to Indonesia and most rely on help from Indonesian volunteer groups sending aid in the form of food and other essential supplies.

Malaysia relies heavily on migrant labourers from across southeast Asia, and many thousands are employed to work in its construction and plantation industries.

Malaysia has so far reported 5,780 virus cases and 98 deaths, according to a running tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
