While science managed to defeat some diseases quickly, there have been other diseases that have existed for decades, some even centuries. Kavita Sivaramakrishnan, Associate Professor, Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University tells us that history has shown that pandemics have been not just biological but turned out to be "social diseases" too. Dr Sivaramakrishnan says that the social impact of coronavirus is very similar to the spread of plaugue in India in the 20th century, and that it raised questions on the power of the state in keeping citizens under control to prevent the spread of disease.
