Delta Lady and Hello, Little Friend were written by Leon Russell. Delta Lady was inspired by Rita Coolidge, one of the album's background vocalists along with Merry Clayton, Bonnie Bramlett, Patrice Holloway, and Sherlie Matthews. Leon Russell became Joe Cocker's future touring partner on The Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

Joe Cocker became known for his presence on stage, where he frequently flailed his arms wildly. In an iconic television moment, John Belushi mimicked those movements as Cocker joined in during a 1976 "Saturday Night Live" performance: Joe Cocker released more than 20 albums over his career. The legendary singer died in December 2014.
