Meet “Maddy the Baddy”, an excitable 8-year-old with antisocial behaviour; Lewis, 12, whose crippling stammer developed after he had to change schools; and Hazel, 15, whose bulimia nervosa makes her gorge and purge ten times a day (suspending the bags of sick outside her bedroom window). They’re all struggling with behavioural or clinical problems that aren’t their fault, yet you may find yourself having a different emotional response to each of them. Your heart immediately goes out to Lewis as he struggles to speak coherently, but the problems Maddy and Hazel face make it harder to be so sympathetic. It’s horribly unfair — as their parents know all too well.
