Robots are a good solution to preventing the spread of Covid-19. However McKinsey’s Michael Chui says there is a set of trade-offs, with some real benefits automation also has the risk of having a negative impact on economies.
Robots doing jobs instead of people can have the consequence of replacing working positions permanently. Stores like Walmart already had machines taking inventory, cleaning and stocking shelves, so the pandemic risks exacerbating these automation processes.
