Feminism and religion? Well, it’s complicated. On the one hand, feminism in Britain emerged out the suffragette critique of patriarchal Christianity, and many women today embrace their faith and feminist identity. On the other hand, it can be difficult to understand why feminists belong to religious institutions that seem to disempower and oppress.

In this lunchtime lecture, Dr Dawn Llewellyn explores the tricky connections and disconnections between feminism, gender, and religion.

Dr Dawn Llewellyn is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Chester, where she researches gender and Christianity. She is the author of Reading, Feminism, and Spirituality: Troubling the Waves (2015) has published on the relationship between feminism and religion, women’s religious reading practices, and motherhood, childlessness and Christianity.
