The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) joined efforts by the police to enforce the coronavirus lockdown, as filmed in Soweto on Thursday. Footage shows soldiers and police officers patrolling the streets.

"This is very effective because we can see our people are starting to heed the call from the president and most of the people are wearing masks, most of them are sanitizing, and most of the people are staying at home," said Charles Stabathaba, a Lieutenant Colonel, adding that a joint operation between the security forces was necessary.

South Africa has reported 3,953 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus with 75 related deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
