Here is some information that led me to choosing hydrogen peroxide as my general purpose cleaner:
First, when you look at its chemical makeup, Hydrogen Peroxide is pretty much water H2O, but there is an extra O, making it H202.
It's as strong as bleach but breaks down harmlessly. That means hydrogen peroxide packs a non toxic punch. I personally use it in cleaning my food and hard surfaces.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is typically found as over-the-counter medication at pharmacies and stores in a three and six percent solution with water. It’s sensitive to light and breaks down with exposure. That’s why it comes in the brown bottle.
In its fully concentrated form it is way too strong for household use and in fact is used as a propellant in rocketry and as a bleaching and corrosive agent in manufacturing facilities.
Hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive and works on germs through oxidation. This process occurs when the reactive oxygen atoms interfere with the electrons of other cells, which causes the walls of the cells forming bacteria to break down.
Does Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfect?
Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful disinfectant that will kill bacteria like staph and viruses like the H1N1 virus, SARS and coronavirus. This makes it a great disinfectant. To get the most disinfecting power, look for 3-6% hydrogen peroxide solution for making your all-purpose cleaner.
