Education sector to use 'a variety of approaches' during the COVID-19 lockdown

Education sector to use 'a variety of approaches' during the COVID-19 lockdown It’s important for schools to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic because children "get a better education” when they receive face-to-face tuition, according to Education Minister Dan Tehan.

“The more we can do to encourage students to be learning at school the better,” Mr Tehan said.

State governments and the major teachers’ union have been pushing for the closure of educational institutions due to fears over the spread of the coronavirus.

The Victorian Government has responded to the crisis by moving all public primary and secondary schools online and the Premier Daniel Andrews announced there will be significant changes for the state’s Year 12 students, with the VCE exams delayed until at least December.

Mr Tehan said the Commonwealth government is pushing “every state and territory to ensure that those children who can’t be cared for safely at home, will be given the opportunity to attend school”.

“The coronavirus will take a lot away from us, but we don’t want it to take away is our children’s education,” Mr Tehan told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

According to Mr Tehan, every state and territory has “jurisdictional responsibility” when it comes to the education system and it is likely there will be a “variety of approaches” over the next few months.
