The coronavirus lockdown is set to be extended as the Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned it will take time for life to return to normal.

The Cabinet is meeting today to agree prolonging social distancing measures amid signs the epidemic in the UK is beginning to peak. However, Mr Hancock said the number of deaths is still "far too high" for any exit strategy to be set out.

Men were twice as likely to die from coronavirus as women in March, according to a new study by the Office for National Statistics, which analysed deaths registered in England and Wales.

The ONS looked into many aspects of the impact of the virus, finding that a quarter of businesses have temporarily closed or paused operations, while many more have been forced to furlough staff. They also found that more than almost half of all adults in the UK are experiencing high levels of anxiety.

President Trump has said the U.S. is "past the peak" of the COVID-19 epidemic and that work can begin to "reopen" the country.

There have been over 30,000 deaths in the United States from coronavirus and nearly 640,000 people have been confirmed to have the disease.

The President said the latest data on the infection was "encouraging" and put America in a strong position to finalise guidelines for reopening the country.

Tens of thousands of pounds of donations have been raised for the family and newborn baby of a pregnant NHS nurse who died from Covid-19.

Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, who worked as a nurse at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital for five years, died on Sunday. Her baby daughter was delivered successfully by caesarean section and is said to be doing well.
